Associated Builders and Contractors-Greater Michigan conducted its annual EIC awards competition at the local level, recognizing and promoting the quality workmanship by our very own merit shop contractors and their employees. This program has been a part of the ABC National program of events for over thirty years and has become the premier competition within the construction industry that recognizes outstanding construction projects across the nation.
2018 EIC Winner:
Niles Plant Services, LLC (NPS) was contacted by Seaway Painting to erect scaffolding for blasting and painting on the Mackinaw Bridge. The scaffold was completed on the North Tower on both sides of the road at heights of 265 feet.
There were many challenges that came with completing the scaffold: high winds/weather, bridge traffic, and expansion of the bridge. Due to heavy traffic, space on the bridge was limited and lanes remained open making the staging and hoisting of material to workers difficult. NPS designed a rolling scaffold to overcome the expansion of the bridge. Scaffold was specifically engineering to handle high winds and enclosure. It was also designed to adhere to bridge movement. The crew started right after the 4th of July and worked until early December. The schedule was based on weather and wind conditions. Due to weather restraints, 60 feet of scaffold remained on the bridge throughout the winter. The crew picked back up early spring as the ice melted to remove the remaining scaffold.
Congratulations to Niles Plant Services!
